Renting a Campervan in Chile: A First-Timer’s Guide

License, insurance, deposits, border crossings and what’s actually included — everything you need to know before booking your first camper.

🚐 4×4 camper 📍 Pickup in Puerto Varas 🛣️ Chile & Argentina

Renting a campervan is the best way to experience Patagonia — but if you’ve never done it, the practical questions pile up fast. What license do you need? How does insurance work? Can you cross into Argentina? What’s actually in the camper?

Here’s a straightforward rundown of how camper rental works in Chile, so you can book with confidence. (We’re based in Puerto Varas, the gateway to the Lake District and the Carretera Austral.)

How it works, step by step

1

Get a quote

Tell us your dates, route and group size. We send back a clear, all-in price with the vehicle and any add-ons spelled out.

2

Reserve with a deposit

A deposit of around half secures your dates; the balance is paid before pickup. With the deposit paid, date changes stay flexible.

3

Pickup & handover

Collect the camper in Puerto Varas. We walk you through how everything works — kitchen, bed, water, gear — before you set off.

4

Hit the road

Drive, camp, explore. We’re a message away on WhatsApp for anything you need en route.

What’s included in the camper

Our Nomad Camper is built on a Toyota Hilux 4×4 — capable on gravel and set up to be self-sufficient, so you can sleep, cook and travel anywhere the road goes. A typical setup includes:

🛏️Sleeping setup
🍳Kitchen & cooking gear
💧Water & storage
🧰Camping essentials

Exact equipment varies by vehicle, so check your quote for the full inventory. Prefer to tow with your own vehicle? Ask about the Yeti XCape Trailer.

License & driving

Visitors can generally drive in Chile on a valid driver’s license from their home country; an International Driving Permit is recommended for some nationalities and is good to carry alongside your home license. You don’t need special qualifications to drive the camper — it handles like a larger 4×4. The main adjustment is gravel (ripio) and Patagonian wind, both easy to manage with a calm, attentive approach.

Insurance & deposit

Rentals include insurance with a deductible (the maximum you’d be responsible for in an incident). As a reference, deductibles are in the order of ~CLP 1,300,000 for collision damage and ~CLP 2,000,000 for total loss or theft, with theft cover applying within Chile. On the payment side, you reserve with a deposit of around half and pay the balance before pickup. These figures are referential — your quote and rental agreement will confirm the exact, current terms.

Crossing into Argentina

Plenty of classic routes dip into Argentina — think El Chaltén, El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier, or the road to Ushuaia. Crossing the border with the camper is possible with the right paperwork, including a permit (around USD 200) that authorizes the vehicle to leave Chile. Let us know at booking if your route crosses the border so we can prepare the documents in advance.

First-timer FAQ

Where do I pick up and drop off the camper?

Pickup and drop-off are in Puerto Varas, in Chile’s Lake District — the natural starting point for the Carretera Austral and the southern volcanoes. One-way drop-offs in other regions can be arranged for an extra fee; ask when you book.

Do I need a 4×4 or special license?

No special license — a valid driver’s license from your home country is the basics, with an IDP recommended for some nationalities. A 4×4 isn’t strictly required for the main Carretera Austral, but the extra clearance and stability make gravel far more comfortable, which is why our campers are 4×4.

How far in advance should I book?

For peak summer (Dec–Feb), book as early as you can — vehicles and ferries fill up. Shoulder seasons are more flexible, but earlier is always better for securing your exact dates.

Can I change my dates after booking?

Date changes are kept flexible once your deposit is paid, subject to availability. If your plans are still firming up, just let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

What happens if something breaks down on the road?

We’re reachable on WhatsApp throughout your trip and will help you sort out whatever comes up. Patagonia is remote, so we also brief you on fuel planning and essentials at handover.

Is camper travel a good option for couples or families?

Yes — it’s one of the most flexible and rewarding ways to travel Patagonia together. You set your own pace, reach remote spots, and skip rigid hotel and restaurant schedules. Tell us your group and we’ll recommend the right setup.

Planning where to go? Start with our routes, the 10-day Carretera Austral itinerary, or our ferries guide.
