A transparent, line-by-line look at what to budget for a self-drive camper trip through Chilean Patagonia — with a worked example.
It’s the first question most people ask — and the honest answer is “it depends.” Season, trip length, vehicle, how far you drive and how you eat all move the number. But you can absolutely plan a realistic budget.
Below we break a Patagonia camper trip into its real cost components, with ballpark ranges and a worked 12-day example for two people. Use it as a planning framework, then get an exact figure with a quote.
⚠️ About these numbers: all figures are approximate 2026 planning ranges, shown in US dollars and paid locally in Chilean pesos (CLP). Rental rates depend on season and length, fuel and food shift with how you travel, and the CLP/USD exchange rate moves — so treat this as a guide and confirm the real total with a quote.
The rental is the core of your budget. Daily rates drop in low season and for longer trips, and rise in peak summer and for short rentals. As a rough guide, expect somewhere in the region of USD 150–230 per day depending on season and trip length. Over a two-week trip, the per-day rate is usually at the lower end.
Patagonia means distance, so fuel is a real line item. Your total depends on how far you drive and the vehicle’s consumption — a typical multi-week Carretera Austral loop covers well over a thousand kilometers. Budget generously, fill up whenever you can in remote sections, and remember diesel/petrol prices climb in far-flung towns.
If your route follows the northern Carretera Austral, ferries are unavoidable — and some are pricey, while others are free. A common planning range is roughly USD 250–500 total depending on which crossings you take and your vehicle length. See our Patagonia ferries guide for the breakdown.
One of the best parts of camper travel: you cook your own meals. Self-catering from supermarkets keeps costs down, with the occasional restaurant meal or seafood splurge in towns. Stock up in larger towns (Coyhaique, Puerto Montt) where prices and selection are better than remote villages.
National park entry fees (CONAF), boat trips (Marble Caves, glaciers), hot springs and guided excursions are optional but add up. Budget a little extra for the experiences you really want — the Marble Caves boat, a glacier tour, or a soak in the termas.
Depending on your route, a few optional fees may apply — for example an Argentina border permit if you cross into Argentina (around USD 200), one-way drop-offs, or airport transfers. These are easy to plan for once your route is set.
Here’s how a typical mid-season Carretera Austral trip might break down for two travelers sharing a camper. Ranges are approximate and per the whole trip unless noted.
Split between two people, that’s roughly USD 1,550–2,350 each for a two-week, self-drive Patagonia adventure — flights not included. Longer trips lower the per-day rental cost; peak summer and short rentals push it up.
💡 Save smart: travel in the shoulder seasons (autumn or spring) for lower rates and fewer crowds; book longer to bring down the daily rental price; cook your own meals; plan fuel stops to avoid pricey remote stations; and ask about relocation deals — discounted one-way rentals when we need a camper moved between regions.
Often, yes — especially for longer trips. You combine transport and accommodation in one, cook your own meals, and skip nightly hotel bookings. The savings grow the longer and more remote your trip.
The camper rental itself, followed by fuel given Patagonia’s distances. Choosing shoulder season and a longer rental are the two biggest levers for lowering your overall cost.
Plan for ferries, national park fees, and any optional add-ons like an Argentina border permit or one-way drop-off. A clear quote should lay these out up front so there are no surprises.
As a rough all-in figure for two people sharing a camper, many travelers land somewhere around USD 130–200 per person per day including rental, fuel, food and activities — less in shoulder season, more in peak summer.
